The Game's Story

Globor the T-Rex wakes up one morning to find that there is a meteor in the sky. Their boss calls him up on the phone and says “Where are you at? We need to open the Cafe!” Globor: “Isn't it the end of times?” Boss: “Exactly, perfect timing to push our new product Red Rex, it gives you wings” Globor: “What are you talking about?” Boss: “Yea its a new beverage addon that gives you wings literally. Armageddon is a great time to sell this stuff, we can market it as your ticket to survival. Mind you though this stuff is expensive to purchase and we need to make our profit too so no giving it away. Also no free samples for yourself, you pay for it like any other customer. I expect your ass here asap so we can get orders going before this asteroid hits.” Globor begrudging “Yes sir”.

This game is a restaurant management game combined with a 2d platformer with a couple varying twists.  You control a dino who is trying to avoid extinction by getting enough tips to afford a Red Rex beverage to allow them to fly to safety.

Take orders from customer, and brew their drinks at your barista station. Get higher tips by making sure to fill out the orders as specified, flirting with the customer, and being timely with your order deliveries.

Tutorials:

Taking Orders:

Walk up to a waiting customer and press 'E' to take their order. When you take their order you get their name and an order ticket is added to the espresso machine in the barista station

Barista Station:

Walk up to the barista station on the ground floor and press 'E' to enter it. Everything you need to make beverages will be here. Use 'A' and 'D' or drag the mouse to the sides of the screen to scroll left or right in the barista station.

Order Tickets:

On the Espresso machine you should see tickets for any customer orders you have taken. If you mouse over the ticket you will see a preview of the ticket which includes the customer's name, what drink they ordered, and any modifications to the drink. On the right side you see a beverage card which shows what ingredients are needed to make the beverage in the order as well as any processes that need to happen. Make sure to remember the customer's name so you know who to deliver the drink to when you are finished

Cup Types:

Different drinks require different cups. Drag cups from the cup piles onto the counter to start adding ingredients to them

Ingredients:

Drag ingredients from their location on the station to either a cup or the blender to add it to your drink. Some ingredients like coffee beans and tea bags need to be processed before they can be added to a drink

Coffee Machine:

Place coffee mugs under the espresso dispensers. Drag desired bean type from the bag into the bean hopper and press the button on the machine to brew coffee. Brewed coffee can be dragged into different cups when finished brewing.

Brewing Tea:

Drag coffee mugs onto the Tea brewing station and they will automatically fill with steamed water. While on the station if you add a Tea bag it will brew into the desired tea. Brewed tea can be dragged into different cups when finished brewing.

Blending/Shaking Beverages:

To blend or shake your beverage you can use the duel purpose Blender/Shaker. Add your ingredients to the blender (either directly or from a cup). To blend, press the blend button and wait for it to finish blending. To shake, drag the blender and shake your mouse back and forth until shaken. Once processed you can pour the contents into a cup by dragging the blender onto a cup.

Delivering Beverages:

To deliver a beverage drag and drop it onto the ladder on the left side of the barista station. This will put the beverage into your hand and you can take it to the customer. If you include Red Rex with their beverage it will give the customer wings and they will fly away and be saved from the meteor. Make sure you remember their name so you can find them again. Press 'E' to deliver the drink in your hand to the waiting customer.

Flirting with Customers:

Press 'F' while next to a customer to flirt with them. You will be frozen as you flirt with them, but once they blush they will give you a better tip when you deliver their drink to them. *Warning the tip system isn't implemented so flirting is just for fun at  the moment

Drinking Beverages:

If you drag and drop a crafted beverage onto the Globor (your character) icon in the barista station you will drink the beverage you have created. Depending on what ingredients are in the drink this will grant you several different boosts. Once tips are implemented you will have to pay for the drinks you drink with your tip money.

The boosts you can get are as follows:

Red Rex - Gives you wings! Allows you to fly which will make delivering to customers easier. It also allows you to escape alive when your shift is over.

Espresso - Caffeine makes you speedy! Increases your movement speed so you can get to customers faster.

Rose - Makes you irresistible! Doubles your flirting speed so you can spend less time flirting and more time delivering drinks!

Matcha - Gives you mind reading powers! Helps you choose the right options when attempting to up-sale Red Rex to your customers. (Boost icon exists, but up-sale mechanic is not yet implemented)

Thoughts on the Game

This was a fun project and we had a great team. We got really ambitious and planned for a ton of features for this game, but sadly were only able to implement so many in the time span of the game jam. However we all fell in love with the idea and want to continue working on it after the jam. I (CranberryNinja) need to thank Shesta and BillyDraws for their excellent art and for putting up with me asking for art features that we did not originally scope. Yall did a wonderful job and I think it shows.

Rawrbucks was intended to be a restaurant management game mixed with a platformer. With the theme being "Learn to Fly" we wanted to play around with parodying Red Bull - It gives you wings. I think at the end of the day we have managed to create the most complex/realistic dinosaur themed Starbucks simulator in existence.

One area I recognized we (and I mean in particular me - CranberryNinja) struggled in, was prioritizing features. In retrospect I feel it would have been more prudent to focus on the base game mechanics first and get the full game loop flushed out before diving into all the intricacies of the workstation. I think because of this we ended up making the game very complicated which will make it difficult to appeal to a general audience. We have some plans to simplify the game mechanics a bit (make amounts irrelevant, maybe reduce some of the necessary steps or amount of ingredients, make the orders appear in scaling difficulties aka start with simple drinks first).

Overall I am very happy with this project. Despite not getting to all the features that we had originally planned I think we have created the bones to a decent restaurant management game and hope to continue working on it after the jam. Thank you again for looking at our project. We greatly appreciate any feedback!

What a fantastic game!!! I really see some true potential here. I'm blown away by how much stuff y'all managed to get in before the deadline, especially when it came to art! The coffee/tea making station was a lot of fun to learn and get a hang of, and making drinks was really cool! The running up and down the map was a bit tedious to me, maybe it would be better if the map were smaller so you had less downtime climbing ladders? I also love the theming and storyline, very clever! Great work!

Rarwrbucks is the equivalent of a dinosaurs love letter to barista life. Brew WILD drinks and serve them to some PREHISTORIC hotties. Complete with lo-fi beats and sick hats! 9/10

Feedback:
For drink making - I was so overwhelmed the first 2 minutes trying to figure out where everything was, but you get into a rhythm pretty quickly after that, the barista station is well organized! Not too many options for different drinks.

For platforming / taking orders - I find the movement a little too floaty and unresponsive to work well for platforming, I tried Red Rex and it wasn't much better. I'd imagine a T-rex to have much better grip while moving.

Jumping/ ladders -  I think the jump needs to go a little bit higher so that ladders aren't the best way to move vertically - think of ladders more as shortcuts to higher places rather than ideal paths.

Level Design - I think you could make the level a bit wider, add some seating areas on a bigger platforms! But keep the barista station central.

Accessibility - Your main menu settings and color choices and fonts were so good! This game is very readable and easy to get the hang of!

Characters - Loved the names and variety of NPC's - I know it's silly but pictures of the customer on order tickets might help a bit more than just name.

Soooo... I get to pick a hat too right?! (just a suggestion).

Great job on this, adding this to my personal collection to see what you guys come up with in future!

Thanks for playing!

For drink making we caught on a little too late that it was getting a bit complicated. I had coded out a drink modding system where customers would ask for different drink modifications like add extra mocha or sub Mammoth Milk for Dodonut Milk, but with how complicated the game already was I turned off that feature for the gamejam submission especially since we really didnt have an tutorials to onboard people. That is something I want to add back once we have a better way to scale in the difficulty and streamline some of the UX elements.

You are totally right on the movement, that is feedback we have already gotten from several people. I appreciate the visualization of a T-Rex having better grip lol. I guess they dont say float like a T-Rex.

We will have to play around more with the level design. We did have plans to make some additional levels post jam.

Good idea for pictures on the order tickets. I also notices while playing easily forgetting which drink goes to who or even what drink I was currently carrying.

We did joke about being able to unlock hats for yourself.

We appreciate all the feedback!
